Interior Decorating Tips for August
Color Therapy in Interior Decorating
Color is the most powerful of all interior decorating elements. It sets the mood of
your household and reflects your personality. Color choice is also the most difficult
for most people. You can use color to match your personality or counterbalance
negative personality traits. As in all interior decorating, balance is the goal
I think people have trouble with color because they are looking at outside sources for
inspiration--so many choices; where to begin? In a previous article, I wrote about
using an inspiration piece to pick your color palette, but what led you to choose that
particular piece to inspire your color selection? Have you ever wondered why you
are attracted to certain colors? Our color preferences have a lot to do with our
personality. Are you introspective or outgoing? Are you easy going or intense? Are
you optimistic or pessimistic? Your color choices can tell you a lot about your
personality. Using color and a little self analysis, you can set a mood, match your
personality, or balance negative personality traits.
• If you are introspective you might feel most comfortable surrounded by a color
palette that reflects the secretiveness and safety of the forest: Choose smoky hues
of green (cedar), brown (espresso), gray (mushroom), and black. Be inspired by
autumn leaf colors for accent colors: gold, copper, red. Spice things up by using lots
and lots of texture that represent bark, leaves, and the forest floor. Transversely, if
you are on the insecure side, these colors will make you feel safe and strengthen you
for your daily work outside the home.
• If you have an outgoing personality, you probably find yourself attracted to bright
clear colors. When decorating, let yourself be inspired by the openness of the sea,
sky and sun. Consider aqua, yellow, white, periwinkle blue, bright coral pink. You can
use these colors in your home if you are trying to balance an overly shy personality.
• Easy going? Consider a monochromatic color scheme. Close your eyes and
picture a savanna with a sea of grasses in tones of camel and brown that turn fiery
copper and red in the setting sun. Use botanicals for added texture and interest. If
you feel hyper intense after a day at work, coming home to a monochromatic color
scheme will speed up the relaxation process.
