Summer Fireplace Idea
Don’t know what to do with your fireplace in the summer? This article will show you
how to hide that dirty, black soot covered fireplace and turn it into the focus point of
the family room.
One day when I was out cruising yard sales and I came across someone’s old
shutters for which I purchased for $5.00. I had an idea in mind to use them somehow
to disguise my ugly, used all winter fireplace for the summer. Read the steps below
to find out more on what needed to be done to give my fireplace a complete
makeover for the summer season.
The first thing needed was some light sand paper to roughen up the texture so the
paint could adhere. Once a light sanding is done make sure you dust off any excess
dust with a dry cloth or blow it off with an air hose. Next you will want to go down to
your local hardware store and purchase some spray paint made for wood and a can
of latex paint of a different color however the two must compliment each other. You
will want to make the spray paint a lighter shade than the latex as we will explain
later. After applying the first coat let dry to manufacturer’s specifications. Next grab
an old dry sponge from your kitchen or cheese cloth works well and dab the darker
color over the top of the lighter colored spray paint allowing the lighter color to show
through in inconsistent patterns. This will give the shutters a custom appearance that
will compliment the colors in your décor. When dry you will need to fasten the shutters
together with some inexpensive hinges which will allow you to fold them to the angle
where they stand on their own. After this is done you can set it in front of your
fireplace and decorate with ivy, grapes or any other artificial plants or vines. There
are endless possibilities for decorating your shutters but remember what matters, is
that it looks good to you.
