What does it take to give your home that “decorator’s touch”? Most people think
decorators have tons of natural talent. While it may be true that we have a natural
sense of style, a lot is based on study and the confidence gained from experience. I
work at developing my own style, but it all begins with my love of gardening. My need
to connect with nature inspires me to use elements and colors provided by the
bounty of the earth. This provides endless possibilities and a rich palette that
combines familiar comfort with the timelessness of nature.
The personality of a room or an entire house comes from the finishing touches such
as color, texture, lighting, and fragrance. Mother Earth provides us with great design
and simple beauty. I believe when we surround ourselves with style elements and
colors that reflect our natural world, we achieve a sense of peace and balance. This
sense of harmony carries us beyond the boundaries of our home and helps us cope
with the outside world.
Listed below are the decorative accessories mentioned previously, along with some
examples. In future columns we’ll delve into each category in more detail and give
